Chapter Five

Hiding the in shadows of the club, Carl kept silent as Avery and Ken left. He’d overheard most of the conversation and realized now that Hunter wasn’t as honest and open as he appeared. Maybe, it was all for a bet or a convenient fuck while the real boss was away. Hunter had made five hundred dollars off of it.

Carl hadn’t moved too fast or talked about a future because he didn’t want to rush a relationship and ruin it. He’d thought dating and working together would help them learn more about each other. It’d felt incredible until ten minutes ago.

Now, Carl realized he’d fallen under the spell of great sex, and it’d made him the butt of a joke. The question was what to do now. Part of him wanted to take the money management away from Hunter and fire him. Of course, he’d have to tell Bev what had happened. The guy might be trustworthy with business but not personal things. Then again, Carl hadn’t asked for any definitions on their relationship.

He forced down the personal pain and focused on the business at hand. Casual sex wasn’t a crime. He’d gotten in bed with an employee of his aunt’s, but that was a mistake he could fix. Distance and control were his only options. It was his normal response when failure hit. He’d taken a risk and been hurt.

Leaning on the wall, he braced himself. The fact that he’d gotten so wrapped up in Hunter so fast frustrated him the most. He wasn’t just embarrassed. He was sad and angry.

Now, he had to exit without starting a fight. This wasn’t personal; it was business. From now on, Hunter was nothing but business.

Carl walked into Bev’s office and nodded. “Looks like you’re almost done. I’m going to head out and get some sleep. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Hunter’s lack of reaction made Carl feel worse. The fact that Carl hadn’t invited Hunter home with him directly or indirectly should have been a tip off that something wrong. Or at least, that something had changed. But Carl didn’t care. He turned and left before Hunter replied.

In the parking lot, he fumbled with his keys. He wanted to run home to work off his frustration and pain. If he ran fast enough, maybe, he’d escape it. Foolish, but it helped to think something could take away the ache.

Carl’s odd and abrupt departure sent up a dozen red flags for Hunter. Carl, normally so forthcoming, had cut him off and, apparently, didn’t want company tonight. Something was very wrong. For the past week, they’d been screwing around and spending most of their time together.

Hunter locked Bev’s office behind him and ran after Carl. Catching him in the parking lot just opening his car door, Hunter grabbed the keys from Carl.

“Stop it!” Carl snapped.

“What’s wrong?” Hunter shoved the keys in his pocket and pinned Carl against the car.

Carl shoved Hunter back unexpectedly, and Hunter stepped back a foot. “Tell me.”

“You don’t care.
